Jim Carrey accepted an honorary César d’honneur at the 2026 César Awards in Paris, but viral clone rumors exploded after fans said he looked “unrecognizable.”

Drag artist Alexis Stone poured fuel on the fire by posting prosthetics and a wig on Instagram that resembled Carrey’s look that night.

The César Awards’ general delegate and Carrey’s longtime publicist have both confirmed: yes, it was actually him — and he spent eight months preparing his French speech to prove it.

After the comedy legend accepted an honorary César d’honneur — France’s equivalent of a lifetime achievement Oscar — at the 51st César Awards ceremony in Paris on February 26, the internet did what the internet does best: completely lost the plot. Viral conspiracy theories spread across social media claiming that the man on stage wasn’t Carrey at all, but a clone, a body double, or an impersonator sent to collect the hardware in his place. Yes, really.

The rumors appear to have started because Carrey, 64, looked noticeably different during his rare public outing. One X account with 47,000 followers declared, “Sorry but there’s a zero percent chance this is actually Jim Carrey. I’m not saying it’s a clone or some dumb illuminati shit, but for some reason he’s clearly using a body double.” The fringe corners of the internet, never ones to undersell a premise, escalated quickly — one account announced with full confidence that “Jim Carrey was cloned and killed by satanists. They can create a clone in 5 months.”

Adding a genuinely chaotic twist to the whole saga: drag artist Alexis Stone posted photos on Instagram showing elaborate prosthetics, a wig, and fake teeth that resembled Carrey’s appearance at the ceremony — seemingly suggesting that Stone had been the one on stage the whole time. Experts have since debunked Stone’s implication, but by then, the clone rumors had already gone fully viral.

A decades-old resurfaced clip of Carrey on Late Night With David Letterman — in which the actor casually mentioned he uses decoys to fool paparazzi — apparently did not help matters.

By Monday morning, the people responsible for actually knowing where Jim Carrey was had officially had enough. Gregory Caulier, the general delegate of the César Awards, put out a statement to Variety that felt like the politely exasperated response of someone who has been asked a very stupid question too many times. “For me, it’s a non-issue,” Caulier said. “I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance.”

He also laid out, in careful detail, just how much the very real Jim Carrey invested in the very real evening. “Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer,” Caulier explained. “From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation. Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words.”

Caulier added that Carrey attended the ceremony with his partner, his daughter, his grandson, 12 close friends and family members, his longtime publicist, and his old friend Michel Gondry, the director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. So not a low-key body-double situation, then.

A couple of hours later, Carrey’s longtime publicist Marleah Leslie confirmed to TMZ with what one can only imagine was maximum restraint: “Jim Carrey attended the César Awards, where he accepted his Honorary César Award.”

That’s it. That’s the whole statement. Legendary.

The irony here is that the actual Jim Carrey, the one who definitely showed up, had a genuinely moving evening. He delivered his entire speech in French — a language he does not speak — bringing the crème de la crème of French cinema to their feet. “As an actor, each character you play is like clay in the sculptor’s hands, which you shape to your heart’s desire,” he said. “How fortunate I have been to share this art with so many people who have truly opened their hearts to me.”

He also revealed that his ancestor Marc-François Carré was born in Saint Malo, France about 300 years ago, and paid tribute to his father, Percy Joseph Carrey, whom he called “the funniest man I have ever known,” adding that he “taught me the value of love, generosity and laughter.”

It was, by all accounts, a beautiful moment. But sure — let’s talk about the clone thing.
