Stephen Colbert recently revealed which person he'd most want to swap lives with for one day, and his answer won't surprise anyone who watches The Late Show.

During a recent appearance at Slate's Political Gabfest celebrating its 20th anniversary, CBS News journalist John Dickerson posed a hypothetical scenario to the comedian: If you could inhabit someone else's body for 24 hours, who would you pick?

Colbert's response came quickly. He'd choose President Donald Trump. And he already knows precisely what action he'd take.

"I would resign," the 61-year-old host declared.

Colbert admitted his selection felt obvious considering how often he discusses the president on his program. Still, he'd mapped out exactly how this imaginary resignation would unfold.

His vision involved no drama or lengthy explanations. Instead, Colbert described a straightforward departure where the president would simply announce he'd accomplished everything, declare himself the greatest and exit on a high note. Clean, quick and conclusive.

The Comedian Worried About the Reverse Situation

After describing his hypothetical actions, Colbert realized an important wrinkle in this fantasy. Body-swapping scenarios typically work both directions, meaning Trump would simultaneously occupy Colbert's life during those same 24 hours.

This realization prompted the host to joke about needing to send his wife away temporarily: "Darling, go see your sister for a while."

These comments arrived shortly after Trump posted harsh criticism of Colbert on Truth Social. The president labeled the comedian a "pathetic trainwreck with no talent or anything else necessary for show business success."

Trump's post went further, claiming Colbert had been "terminated by CBS, but left out to dry" and suggesting the network should "put him to sleep," calling it "the humanitarian thing to do." He characterized Colbert as someone "running on hatred and fumes."

Could Colbert Seek Office After His Show Ends?

The sustained attacks from Trump intensified after Colbert announced in July 2024 that his program would conclude in May 2026 following a decade-long run. The president has referenced this ending repeatedly in recent months.

At the same Political Gabfest event, Dickerson raised another question fans frequently pose to Colbert: Might he pursue the presidency himself in 2028?

Colbert's initial answer was definitive: "Absolutely, I should not run for president."

He then acknowledged why viewers might hope otherwise before pivoting into a mock-serious political response. He suggested he'd need to consult with religious advisors and family members about whether he could provide even greater service to the country once his television duties conclude.

Both the body-swap scenario and presidential speculation demonstrate Colbert's characteristic blend of pointed political commentary wrapped in absurdist humor. He maintains enough perspective to recognize when his own responses fall into expected patterns.

Whether Trump will issue a response to these latest remarks from Colbert remains unknown, though their public back-and-forth shows no indication of ending before The Late Show wraps production next year.
