Rob Reiner's son Jake Reiner is opening up about his parents' death and his brother Nick's connection to the family tragedy.
In a Substack essay published on Friday, Jake reflected on his life after his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood, Los Angeles, home on December 15. Their son Nick was arrested and charged with murder in connection with their killings soon after. He pleaded not guilty in February.

"We lost more than half of our family that night in the most violent way imaginable," Jake wrote in the essay. "Sure, any loss of a parent is devastating, but nothing compares to losing both of them at the same time and, on top of that, having your brother be at the center of it. It's almost too impossible to process."
He continued, "I understand that people have questions about what happened. Some of those answers will come in time. But some parts of this belong only to our family, and keeping them private is the only way to protect what little remains of something that was taken from us."

Elsewhere in his post, Jake revealed how he learned about his parents' death. He was at Los Angeles' Union Station for a celebration of life honoring one of his best friends when his sister Romy contacted him with the news. "I received a call from my sister Romy telling me our father was dead," he wrote. "Minutes later, she called back telling me our mother was also dead."
"My world, as I knew it, had collapsed," Jake wrote. "I was in a trance. The only thing I could focus on was that I needed to get to my childhood home. I needed to get to my sister. I needed to figure out what the hell just happened."**
Every day since his parents' death, Jake wrote, has been "horrendous. "In the middle of trying to process the most devastating moment of your life, the world demands meetings, paperwork, decisions, and explanations; as if documentation must come before mourning."

Romy and Jake previously shared a joint statement about their parents' deaths on December 17. "Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day," they said. "The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends."**
The siblings continued, "We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life. We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave."**

Nick, who has been in custody since December, last appeared in court on Feb. 23, pleading not guilty to the murder charges stemming from the fatal stabbings of his parents. Nick was not granted bail during the hearing, which lasted for less than 10 minutes.
Rob and Michele's death certificates revealed that they died within "minutes" of sustaining "multiple sharp force injuries" inflicted "with [a] knife, by another" in their home home, reported PEOPLE.
Nick is due back in court on April 29 for a preliminary hearing. There, a judge will determine if prosecutors have enough evidence to proceed to trial. If convicted, Nick faces life in state prison without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty. Prosecutors have not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty for this case.
