Zack Snyder is sharing some never-before-seen photos of Henry Cavill wearing Christopher Reeve's original Superman costume.

Snyder, the 59-year-old filmmaker who directed Cavill, 42, in 2013's Man of Steel and the subsequent DC Extended Universe movies, gave fans something to cheer about on Thursday, Dec. 25 when he posted a photo to Instagram showing Cavill wearing the suit made iconic by original Superman Reeve in the 1970s.

"Henry Cavill. The original Superman suit. This photo. It was undeniable," Snyder wrote in a caption to his post.

According to Variety, the images are what Snyder showed to Warner Bros. executives when he was pitching Cavill as the new Clark Kent/Superman in his DC Universe.

Snyder frequently shares still images from his movies, including from his time making Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League to his Instagram account. One day after he posted the photo of Cavill in the original Superman costume, he posted another picture showing Cavill closer to the camera, with light shining on his chest and the iconic Superman logo.

"With the last image I shared, and this one we showed WB everyone agreed: Henry Cavill was Superman. That’s where the journey began. -Merry Christmas," Snyder wrote in that caption.

Cavill portrayed Superman/Clark Kent in five total movies during the 2010s and early 2020s, beginning with Man of Steel. He last made an appearance as the character on the big screen with an uncredited cameo in Dwayne Johnson's 2022 DC movie Black Adam, which released shortly before Cavill announced he would no longer play the character in December 2022.

DC Studios revamped its adaptation of its comic book universe beginning with director James Gunn's new Superman movie, which released in July and starred David Corenswet in the title role. Corenswet, 32, appears poised to portray the character moving forward; the new DC universe will continue with next year's Supergirl (starring Milly Alcock) and Clayface. A sequel to Superman titled Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to release July 9, 2027.

On Dec. 7, Snyder shared an image of Cavill in one of his Superman movies and wrote the DC characters "are a kind of modern mythology, and I put a ton of reverence and respect into bringing them to life."

"Seeing that resonate with so many of you means the world. Here’s to many more stories together!" he wrote at the time.

Cavill most recently appeared on the big screen in 2024, when he starred in Argylle and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. He also made a memorable cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine.

The actor has a number of projects in the works, including In the Grey and a remake of the 1986 fantasy movie Highlander.

Snyder most recently released the second part to his Netflix science fiction-fantasy film series Rebel Moon. This year, he created the streamer's animated series Twilight of the Gods.
