Anne Hathaway actually did mount a groundbreaking fashion endeavor in September 2022, when she sat next to* **Devil Wears Prada** *inspiration Anna Wintour while wearing an outfit many deemed similar to one her character, Andy Sachs, wore in the first film. Now, in an interview with **, Hathaway explains the viral moment that made headlines ahead of the highly anticipated sequel.

"That was a total fluke," Hathaway says when EW asks about the famous photo (below), taken at a Michael Kors runway show at New York Fashion Week.

In the image, Hathaway wears a brown leather jacket, a black turtleneck, and sports long bangs — immediately recalling the same outfit Andy, a budding journalist who takes (and later leaves) a grueling job working under ruthless fashion editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), dons at the end of the 2006 movie.

"What happened was, I was supposed to wear something completely different, very orange, kind of like if a cheerleader did streetwear, but the shoes didn't look right with it," Hathaway continues. "I thought, *I'm going to a fashion show, people really expect that kind of coordination*. I said, 'What's the other choice?' The other choice was a brown leather jacket with a brown skirt and the turtleneck."

Hathaway says she'd "just gotten my bangs cut" and placed her hair in a ponytail to head out the door.

"I looked in a mirror, and I thought, that's funny, I think I look like Andy Sachs right now, I wonder if anyone will notice?" continues the Oscar-winning star. "That's the thing, I show up, and who am I sat next to, but Anna! I was like, I think something's happening right now, but it was completely accidental, totally unplanned, but perhaps part of the reason why we're here [with the sequel]!"

Streep, seated next to Hathaway, calls the moment "kismet." The pair also feels that way about the sequel itself, releasing nearly 20 years to the day after the first film, which earned two Academy Award nominations, grossed $327 million, and became a modern feminist classic.

Elsewhere in the interview, Hathaway says that Wintour "does not get enough credit for what a spectacular sense of humor she has." The fashion icon even came to set to film a cameo that director David Frankel explains was ultimately cut from the final film.

"Unfortunately, she jumped her cue, so she's a little out of focus in the one shot that we did. I didn't want to call for take two; I didn't know if she had the patience for that!" Frankel says. "Twenty years ago, we were not welcomed in that [fashion] world, and over the two decades, all the actors have become friends with Anna, and it's great to be able to collaborate with *Vogue*."

Frankel's remarks come five years after he previously told EW that he had a chilling experience with Wintour following the release of the first film.

"I remember her daughter nudging her through the screening, like, 'They got that right!' A couple years later, I was at a tennis tournament in Miami…seated behind her, and when it was over, I made the effort to introduce myself. 'I'm David Frankel, the director of *The Devil Wears Prada*,' and [she took her] hand out of [my handshake]!" the filmmaker said at the time, adding that fashion designers were also afraid to incur Wintour's wrath if they appeared in the film.
